May 1, 2016 - Via Francigena Day 14

Bolsena to Montefiascone (17.5 km)

After a relaxing day off yesterday, we left the sleepy lakeside town of Bolsena and had an enjoyable walk to Montefiascone, somehow managing to avoid the rain, although clouds occasionally threatened.
Leaving Bolsena

This lovely German couple that we had encountered a few times had walked from Switzerland to Aosta two years ago and last year from Aosta to Lucca.  This year they were walking the final stage to Rome.

Pilgrim's rest

Before entering Montefiascone, and as the Winewalkers we are, we had to pause at the Basilica of San Flaviano to pay homage to Dufuk...

...the story goes that in 1111 Canon Defuk accompanied Holy Roman Emperor Henry V to Rome and he instructed his valet to precede him and to inscribe the word "Est" (there is) on the doors of the inns where the best wine was to be had. On the door of the inn at Montefiascone the "Est" was written three times (Est, Est, Est), and Dufuk relished the wine so highly that he never left the town, eventually drinking himself to death and is entombed in the church with the inscription:
(Here my master is buried, who died because he had too much wine EST! EST!! EST!!!)
Montefiascone
Montefiascone looked quite beautiful from a distance, unfortunately when we arrived it was closed, or seemly so, this being a Sunday.
We did find one cafe open, but it was full of dubious clientele, that we eventually realized we're fellow pilgrims.
Entering Montefiascone

Later on some restaurants decided to open for dinner. We found a good one called Borgo Antico, a family run restaurant on the main street in the old town. With the weather turning cold we ran through a downpour and grabbed the table next to their heater to warm up and enjoyed their pasta with an excellent bottle of Montefalco red (Est, Est, Est).  Our German friends were at the table next to us and a good time was had by all!

Winewalkers only a week away from Rome...
