We are riding the rails to Porto after our two days in Lisbon. Two days wasn't quite enough time to take in all this city has to offer, but because of our flight delays in getting here we have lost an entire day of our holiday, traded a day in Lisbon for a day in Toronto.
Yesterday we went out to Sintra, a 40 minute train ride from Lisbon. Sintra had been described as a place where the wealthy royalty had built summer palaces a few hundred years ago. Today it caters to tourists and they come literally by the trainload. Also of interst is the Moorish fortress that sits above it all. Buses shuttle tourists to it's gates, while the energetic walk and climb the stairs for some 1400 meters. Our group chose the energetic method...
Back in Sintra we enjoyed a picnic lunch before catching the train back to Lisbon.
Lisbon sights:
A city of amazing graffiti...
The Cafe Brazileira, serving coffee to artists, writers, philosophers and the likes of our motley crew for over 100 years.
We enjoyed our short stay in Lisbon and found it to be a relaxed and laid back city and yet had a vibrancy about it. A city we would definitely want to come back to. We didn't see many street people and didn't feel threatened by crime or pickpockets, but we were aware that they are both out there, as in most large cities. We loved our centrally located hotel, the Residencial Florescente, with it's friendly helpful staff and only a 75 euro rate.
