April 24, 2016 - Via Francigena Day 8

Ponte d'Arbia to San Quirico d'Orcia (26.1 km)

What a difference a day of rain makes!  The two pictures below tell the story of the effects of the rain from one day to the next, both taken out the window of our room at Affittacamere Martelli: the first one was taken shortly after our arrival yesterday, the second one was taken this morning!

Leaving Affittacamere Martelli in the morning

The effects of yesterday's rain was very evident as we encountered muddy roads that made progress very slow.  Sometimes it was easier to walk off the road and onto the adjacent field, but that wasn't much better...
The kind of mud that builds up under your shoes and makes you several inches taller...
A tendency to get bogged down...

Eventually we see Buonconvento in the distance

Entering Buonconvento

A welcome break!
We hated to bring our soggy, muddy selves into this cozy establishment, but they made us feel very welcome!

And only about 250 km to go!

Back on the trail we continue to encounter other pilgrims of other nationalities, including this Spanish couple

We had packed a lunch to eat along the way, but when we saw this sign, we reconsidered our plan...after all we are Winewalkers!
A bottle of water, a glass of wine, and a sandwich for €7

The winery apologized, that because of the holiday their chef was not there that day, so there would be no sandwich.  They were really only open for wine tastings, but she offered us this bottle of wine to enjoy for free to compensate.   Well... we accepted!

Back on the trail, where the beauty of this amazing country never fails to impress, even in inclement weather.

Just another hilltop village
The town of Torrenieri that we had passed through on two other occasions on the way to San Quirico, was currently being given a new road surface.  We were happy to run into Cecelia and Terry, two fun Dutch pilgrims that we had encountered several times over the last few days.
