April 22, 2016 - Via Francigena Day 6

Monteriggioni to Siena ( 18.8 km)

There had been a brief bit of rain in the early morning, but it was looking a little more promising by the time we left Mongeriggioni...
Morning in Moneriggioni

Cheryl ready to leave by the western gate
On the road out of Monteriggioni we were soon joined by this friendly group of Italians from near Milan, who began walking in Lucca, as we did, and were going as far as Siena.  This would be their last day on the trail and we would miss their fun and camaraderie.

Unmentioned before, but Cheryl and our travelling companion, David, had been suffering from blisters after the first few days on the trail.  The blisters had been requiring daily treatment, but what was really needed was a day of rest.  Unfortunately it would be another week before our scheduled day off.  In 45 years of hiking together this was the first time Cheryl had suffered from blisters!

At a point on the trail, we decided to take the shorter bicycle route into Siena, to save their feet the added distance, this would save us 5.5 km, according to the Lightfoot Guide.  So we said goodbye to our temporary companions of the trail, after exchanging email addresses and receiving an invitation to go hiking in Sardinia in the future!

Siena would have been an excellent place to have taken a day off from the trail, but we had been here before and would be coming back again at the end of the Francigena before returning home.
