Via Francigena on the horizon

It is hard to believe that almost a year has gone by since I last posted to this blog. Our plans for 2015 took a change of directions due to circumstances beyond our control, and other than a trip to Paris last May, we were relegated to staying close to home.  Plans for a walk in Spain had to be postponed for a while...

This year, though, is a different matter.  We plan to return to Italy in April for an extended trip.  We will begin in April and walk the Via Francigena from Lucca to Rome, a walk that we have had our sites on for some time.

Our walk will take us over some familiar territory, as we will return to a few of the towns and villages that we passed through in 2011 and 2012.  In those years we crossed paths with the Francigena, although we were headed in a different direction.

The Via Francigena has been a pilgrimage for over a thousand years.  The route officially begins in Canterbury, England, and passes through England, France, Switzerland and Italy to arrive at the tombs of the apostles, Peter and Paul in Rome.  A journey of over 1800 kilometres.  Our route from Lucca will be about 420 kilometres and will take us almost 3 weeks.

We have made the bold move of booking all of our accommodation ahead of time... the first time we have done such a thing.  One less worry to have on the road.  Some of it was booked through the Booking.com website, which allows for free cancellation up to the day before in most cases.  We'll see how that goes.

As for now, with less than 5 weeks to go, we have stepped up our training!
